Costa Maya Cruise Port: Tips, Attractions and Weather

Try some traditional Mexican dishes or some well loved favorites (like nachos, salsa and guacamole). Booking a shore excursion is best if you want to venture further out and away from the Costa Maya cruise port. Taxis, shuttles and golf carts are available to take you to areas outside of the cruise terminal, including the Mahahual Village. The local population is very friendly but not pushy and speaks English reasonably well. For those cruising with families, there are lots of things to do.

Now it boasts a healthy influx of tropical cruises and tourists, all vying for a glimpse of hidden tropical beauty. The other three sites are about two hours from the port, so visiting them is a full-day trip. Anyone interested in Mayan culture may want to visit the ruins at either Chacchoben, Kohunlich or the ruins at Dzibanche and Kinichna. These excursions usually cost $100 to $150 per person depending on the location and amenities. It is near the border with Belize, so it is an occasional port of call for ships that also visit Belize City.

It was just a short distance from the port and a great option for families with water features, ziplines, and more. Unfortunately, the park closed during Covid and has yet to re-open. So you can come and order food and drinks, and then there is everything that you need for a day at the beach. They offer loungers, lockers, umbrellas, and even wi-fi and kayaks. The menu is classic Mexican beach fare that ranges from lobster (of course) to guacamole, tacos, ceviche, and more.

There is only one exit out of the gated cruise terminal's parking area. The gates open into a street with a central pedestrian corridor lined by buildings, which not long ago had a bustling activity. As you get close to the entrance to the Terminal, you will see the Tour Dispatch area and a late minute tour desk to book an excursion if you haven't booked one already. I have been cruising since 2004 and have sailed on dozens of cruises all over the world. As the creator of this website, I want to help families plan fun cruises free of stress and filled with adventure!

Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by the towering pyramids and well-preserved structures that make up the Calakmul archaeological site. Immerse yourself in the rich history of the Mayan civilization, admire the impressive architecture, and gain a deeper understanding of this ancient society. Exploring the Dzibanche Ruins also offers a chance to learn about the daily life and rituals of the Mayan people. You can preview what excursions may be offered on the Puerto Costa Maya’s website. Your trip wouldn’t be complete without swimming with the dolphins. Take advantage of the dedicated dolphin centers to swim with these beautiful and playful creatures. A marine specialist will teach you how to interact with these animals while having fun with them. If you prefer to rest and relax, La Bamba Beach provides a serene setting, and it’s located just 20 minutes south of Costa Maya.

While Costa Maya’s cruise port is not very central to other popular Mexican cities, it has its own unique offerings. Learn more about this port and its best offerings to travelers. It is a precious jewel in Costa Maya and a very popular destination for scuba diving, snorkeling and other sport activities.

Walking Around Attractions

Our party of four had an open pergola with a beach bed, multiple chairs, a hammock, and a table. Seating areas vary depending on party size but you are guaranteed a beach chair for each guest and a beach bed at each seating location. Like with the entire area, you have two options — eat at the port or head into Mahahual. If all this sounds like it was designed to keep you entertained without ever leaving, then you’d be right. You can do practically anything you can do in other ports, all within the relatively small area.

You can spend the entire day moving from one attraction to another. Besides taking a plunge in the pools, you can also have fun at the bars and restaurants. Book an excursion to the Seven Colors Lagoon, commonly known as Bacalar Lagoon.

It’s easy enough to set up a spot and order something while you enjoy the beach. After you get a ride into Mahahual, you’ll find there is a “main drag” — a walkway that winds down alongside the beach. On one side you’ll have the beach and the other is filled with shops and restaurants. Just down the coast from the cruise pier is a large lighthouse that stands on the point at the beginning of Mahahual. While it takes only a couple of minutes to see, it’s a neat landmark on your way into town. You can also take a photo with the “Mahahual” sign (complete with a huge marlin sculpture) to remember your vacation.

The place offers many excursion options, such as private beach breaks, all-inclusive packages, and snorkel boat tours. And after a long day of exploring, you can pick a dining spot where you’ll be guaranteed delicious food and excellent service. The giant Mayan temple with water slides is hard to miss for cruise visitors on the decks of visiting ships. Tickets for Lost Mayan started at $99 for adults and $89 for children.

This smaller site gets fewer visitors but still gives you an impressive sense of the advanced Mayan people. It includes several excavated pyramids, wall, and staircases that laid covered from more than 1,000 years until the discovery of the site in the 1940s. The beach and swimming are available too, but restaurants have taken over most of the best spots.
